Building Expertise: the National Picture

Regional public health groups work across government departments with a number of community and voluntary groups, non-governmental bodies and other public sector organisations to raise awareness of public health issues.

These multi-agency networks enable regional public health groups to build a strong health component into regional programmes such as crime, economic development, transport, education and skills, housing, environment and regeneration.

Alongside public health specialists, many others have a significant public health role within their job roles – school teachers, health visitors, housing officers, police and probation workers, community workers and others. Regional public health groups have an important strategic role in building capacity and capability in the public health workforce at all of these levels.

Public Health Intelligence

Each Government Office region has a public health observatory (PHO) responsible for monitoring and evaluating the health of regional populations, by analysing information and assessing health trends.   PHOs work as part of the wider regional intelligence network.  Regional public health groups work closely with their PHO to increase awareness of public health issues and health trends across all organisations, identifying wider determinants of health and monitoring progress on the health of the population and health inequalities.
