150 employers pledge 85,000 opportunities for young people

Published: Wed, 02 Sep 2009 16:28:37

The Prime Minister, Work and Pensions Secretary Yvette Cooper and top employers signed up to Backing Young Britain met 250 young people at a Youth Summit at Birmingham City Football Club today [Wednesday, 2 September].

Backing Young Britain is a national cross-government campaign to encourage employers across the country to do everything possible to give young people the help they need to find a job or additional training, work skills and experience.

Government and employers are pledging an extra 85,000 opportunities.  They range from Morrisons’ promise to provide new training for every one of its 36,000 employees under the age of 25 to Government help in accessing jobs in retail, tourism, leisure and hospitality for 45,000 young people.

More information on Backing Young Britain, including how to pledge your support or offer opportunities to help young people is available on the Backing Young Britain website.  A video of the launch event is available on the Number 10 website.
