Regional Minister Rosie Winterton yesterday highlighted three headline announcements in the Chancellor's Budget as a huge boost for Yorkshire & the Humber. In addition to extra help for hard-pressed families and businesses, there were three significant announcements welcomed by the Regional Minister.

  • Digital Region - a ground-breaking project developed in South Yorkshire by Yorkshire Forward, in partnership with the four Local Authorities of Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Sheffield, who together have attracted European, regional, local and private investment of over £90m. The project could create some 7,000 new jobs.
  • Leeds City Region Forerunner Plan - the Leeds City-Region Partnership of 11 local authorities is one of only two nationally to be selected as City-Region Pilots. The pilots will give Leeds real strategic powers to increase jobs and skills, and deliver more on housing and infrastructure, in a way that reflects their local economy and helps them recover from and look beyond the downturn.
  •  Carbon Capture and Storage - The Chancellor's announcement of support for this ground-breaking green technology is an area where Yorkshire and The Humber is particularly well placed to play a key role.
