Regional Minister calls for streamlined action plan to focus on job losses in Yorkshire & the Humber

Published: Tue, 13 Jan 2009 09:03:31

A comprehensive action plan to deal swiftly with job losses in Yorkshire & the Humber and to get people back to work as soon as possible is to be drawn up for Regional Minister Rosie Winterton. The move comes in the wake of a £0.5 billion package of aid for jobseekers announced by the Prime Minister today.

The blueprint will streamline the number of groups that offer redundancy help to both individuals and firms hit by the downturn and which have developed as a result of the economic crisis. A rationalised structure would report in to the Minister's top-level Regional Economic Delivery Group.

The Minister's Economic Delivery Group, meeting in Leeds, was informed that vacancies in the region had increased over the past two months to stand at over 34,000 with some sectors performing well. Unemployment was rising, however, with the claimant count now over 100,000 in the region and more job losses expected.
