Yorkshire and the Humber residents join forces to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhoods

Published: Thu, 09 Oct 2008 11:31:45

Residents in Yorkshire and the Humber are taking to the streets for a week of action to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

"Not In My Neighbourhood Week", which runs from Monday, 13 October, to Friday, 17 October, aims to promote better understanding of what is being done locally to tackle crime and to remind people that a large number of public services and local organisations, not just the police, play a vital part in driving down crime.

Residents' organisations, neighbourhood policing teams, local authorities, Neighbourhood Watch, local authorities, anti-social behaviour teams, drug and alcohol action teams and Government Ministers are leading the efforts to inform local people of what is being done in their area.

Examples include:
* A police information bus with the theme 'Isn't it time we tackled crime?' in Barnsley town centre, along with officers from the Town Centre Safer Neighbourhood Team and Neighbourhood Watch volunteers
* Daily presentations in schools about motorbike nuisance, litter patrols and anti-truancy action in Doncaster
* Action against anti-social behaviour in Leeds, including public information events at a local supermarket, and home visits in key areas by officials from various partner organisations
* An operation to crack down on traffic in two areas in Bradford that have been highlighted as the worst in the country for uninsured vehicles, and an initiative to crack down on knives in the city centre
* Action against under-age drinking in Ryedale, and an initiative against poaching called Operation Leveret. The 'Ryepod' - a display vehicle operated by Ryedale Voluntary Action Group - will be in Malton market place all week
* Activities around Hull Fair, including work on anti-social behaviour and environmental crime
* Activity for York's two universities to coincide with Freshers Week, including crime prevention and safety advice. There will also be a domestic violence awareness initiative, crime-prevention surveys and estate walkabouts
