New business tool in a class of its own says Minister

Published: Thu, 18 Sep 2008 10:02:09

An innovative web-tool to link business to schools was launched in Leeds yesterday with the enthusiastic backing of Regional Minister Rosie Winterton and will be piloted throughout Yorkshire & the Humber before a planned national roll-out next year.

The Minister gave the keynote speech at the launch of 'Business in Schools', a unique website that will enable employers to 'match' their business with schools and colleges in their community to fill work-related learning opportunities.

Created by independent education foundation Edge, the free website is the key part of their new campaign designed to encourage more employers to engage in education and provide the simplest means to do so. Businesses in Yorkshire & the Humber will be able to go online to search for work-related learning opportunities available at local schools and colleges. There will be a wide range of activities from which to choose, including mock interviews, mentoring, enterprise projects and workplace visits.

Edge developed the web-tool as a direct result of research which showed that while almost 90% of employers in Yorkshire & the Humber thought it vital for young people to get practical experience of the workplace while in education, only 6% were fully involved with local schools and colleges.
