£168,000 announced to provide cycle training for 4,000 children across South Yorkshire

Published: Mon, 17 Mar 2008 11:34:18

Transport Minister Rosie Winterton today (March 17) announced a £168,680 grant to provide cycle training for over 4,000 school children across South Yorkshire, part of a £3 million funding package that will provide training for over 80,000 children across the country by March 2009.

School children in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield will benefit from the grant.
The funding is part of the record £140m package announced in January, which will give up to half a million ten to eleven year olds cycle training by 2012.

Cycling has a major role to play in the Government's drive to promote sustainable travel - 41% of all trips are less than two miles, a distance easily cycled in less than 15 minutes. Bikeability training gives children and parents the skills and confidence to cycle safely on today's busy roads, enabling them to undertake short journeys, for example cycling to school.
