Appointments bring fresh experience to the board of Yorkshire Forward

Margaret Hodge, Minister of State for Industry and the Regions, yesterday announced three new appointments to the Board of Yorkshire Forward. Jonathan Metcalfe, Professor Michael Arthur and Councillor John Weighell will take up their three-year appointments on 14 December 2006, representing the business, education and local authority sectors respectively.

Margaret Hodge said:
"The RDAs have a crucial role to play as drivers of economic development in their region, working to reduce imbalances within and between regions. Yorkshire Forward will be able to use the knowledge and expertise these appointments bring to help the region reach its full economic potential, boost productivity and create jobs and prosperity"

Terry Hodgkinson, Chair of Yorkshire Forward said:
"I am delighted to welcome such a strong line up to the Board. All three new Board members bring a great deal of knowledge and experience from their respective sectors and I am confident they will add real value to the work of the RDA"

Margaret Hodge also announced the reappointments of 2 existing members of Yorkshire Forward's Board. Nic Dakin and Stella Guy have been re-appointed to serve a second term of office for three and two years respectively. The original appointments were made following open competition in accordance with the requirements set down in the Commissioner for Public Appointments Code of Practice.

Yorkshire Forward is a business-led organisation and provides strategic leadership to promote economic development, enterprise and regeneration within Yorkshire and The Humber, tackling economic differences as well as driving up the performance as a whole.

The individuals above do not hold any other Ministerial appointments.
Regional Development Agency board posts attract a remuneration of £8,316 per year for a commitment of a minimum of two days per month.
These new or additional appointments were made following open competition in accordance with the requirements set down in the Commissioner for Public Appointments Code of Practice. All appointments are made on merit and political affiliation plays no part in the selection process. Within the last five years, individuals detailed above have undertaken the following political activities:

* John Weighell has obtained office as a local councillor for the Conservative Party and is also the leader of the North Yorkshire Conservative Group. He has spoken on behalf of the party. He has acted as a political agent, canvassed for the party or helped at elections as well as undertaking other political activities;

* Michael Arthur has undertaken no political activity within the last five years;

* Jonathan Metcalfe has undertaken no political activity within the last five years.
