Green power for Doncaster’s green-fingered young people

Published: Tue, 01 Dec 2009 17:06:50

Young gardeners in the Doncaster area will soon be harnessing the sun’s rays to enable them to continue weeding and sowing after darkness falls on their allotment.
The already green-minded young people of the Just Ask project in Mexborough have been awarded funding for new solar-powered lighting and a shelter so they can work on as daylight disappears.

This innovative idea means that they can continue digging and tending the vegetables and plants at their plot into the evening - traditionally a time when young people are looking for things to do.

Enthusiastic groups of youngsters from Mexborough School and De Warenne Academy in Conisbrough work on the allotment and regularly come up with their own ideas for developing it. They grow fruit and vegetables and have tended livestock such as chickens and rabbits and also have a chill-out area for socialising.  They have even produced home-made jams, chutneys and pickles from fruit from their plot for bartering at market.
