Yorkshire & Humber authorities receive flood protection grants

Published: Thu, 25 Jun 2009 10:50:58

Leeds, Doncaster, Wakefield and East Riding Councils will receive personal flood protection funding for households through new grants announced by Environment Secretary Hilary Benn today.

The four local authorities in the Yorkshire and Humber region are set to receive a total of £432,600 to protect 76 homes offering practical flood protection solutions, including air brick covers and door guards.

The £5 million Flood Protection Grant Scheme was announced as part of the Government’s response to Sir Michael Pitt’s review of the 2007 floods. The first round of funding in total has been made available to 25 local authorities across England to protect up to 593 properties across England.

This funding for Yorkshire and the Humber announced today is in addition to over £4.7 million Government spending per year in the area to maintain flood defences and pumping stations and to carry out channel clearance in the Yorkshire and Humber area. An additional £7.1 million has been spent or is currently being used to repair and upgrade flood defences damaged in 2007, while a further £24 million is currently being invested in the development and deployment of flood defence, alleviation and protection schemes in the region.
