Low carbon businesses opportunities for Yorkshire

Published: Wed, 29 Apr 2009 14:35:10

Rosie Winterton MP, Minister for Yorkshire and the Humber, yesterday delivered the keynote speech at the Low Carbon Economy regional summit, in which she laid out the Government's Low Carbon vision and spoke about how Government would help businesses in Yorkshire and the Humber make the most of the opportunities a shift to a low carbon economy will present.

Addressing businesses and regional agencies at a regional low carbon summit in Leeds, in partnership with Ernst & Young, the Minister outlined the Government's commitment to a low carbon economy. The recent document 'Low Carbon Industrial Strategy: A Vision' identifies four key areas where Government believes that the UK needs a step change:

* Energy efficiency to save businesses, consumers and the public services money
* Putting in place the energy infrastructure for the UK's low carbon future - in renewables, nuclear, Carbon Capture and Storage and a 'smart' grid
* Making the UK a global leader in the development and production of low carbon vehicles
* Ensuring our skills, infrastructure, procurement, research and development, demonstration and deployment policies make the UK the best place to locate and develop a low carbon business and make sure international business recognises that.
