Royal accolades for enterprising Yorkshire and Humber businesses...and individuals

Published: Mon, 21 Apr 2008 10:27:27

The annual winners and recipients of The Queen's Awards for Enterprise were announced on 21 April, The Queen's birthday. They are the UK's most prestigious accolades for business-related achievement and a total of 139 business Awards and 11 individual Awards have been conferred this year.

In Yorkshire and the Humber these include 15 business Awards - the highest number in the region this decade - and one individual Award. Twelve Awards are made in the International Trade category alone.

This is the fourth year of The Queen's Award for Enterprise Promotion (QAEP), an Award for individuals who have played an outstanding and significant role in promoting the growth of business enterprise and entrepreneurial skills and attitudes in others. There are ten standard Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Queen's Awards for businesses honour outstanding UK companies. In Yorkshire and the Humber these range from companies as diverse as a designer of marine electronic systems, a manufacturer of horse feed, a fish trader and a producer of digital set-top boxes. Several of this year's successful companies are winning Awards for a second time, and one for a third.

Three Awards go to firms with only three employees - one of which is in North Yorkshire - and another goes to an international giant that employs 106,200 people. The Awards are made in three separate categories: International Trade, Innovation, and Sustainable Development.
