Regional Sustainable Development Framework

The Yorkshire and Humber region recognises Sustainable Development (SD) as its central policy goal and is committed to putting it at the heart of all the region’s strategic plans. Integral to the delivery of SD through those strategies is the Regional Sustainable Development Framework (RSDF), which provides the framework for SD delivery.

Ensuring that the RSDF approach is fully integrated into funding, policy and decision making at all levels across the region is a key objective for all the regional partners including the Government Office.

The RSDF identifies 15 key aims for the region, and key indicators for measuring their progress. These are all to be pursued together, with the aim of moving all the indicators in the right direction.  The 15 aims are:
1. Good employment opportunities available to everyone
2. Conditions which enable business success, economic growth and investment
3. Education and training opportunities which build the skills and capacity of the population
4. Conditions and services which engender good health
5. Safety and security for people and property
6. Vibrant communities which participate in local decision making
7. Culture, leisure and recreation opportunities available to all
8. Local needs met locally
9. A transport network which maximises access whilst minimising detrimental effects
10. A quality built environment and efficient land use patterns that make good use of derelict sites, minimise travel, and promote balanced development
11. Quality housing available to everyone
12. A biodiverse and quality natural environment
13. Minimise pollution levels
14. Minimise greenhouse gas emissions and a managed response to the effects of climate change
15. Prudent and efficient use of energy and natural resources and minimal production of waste
When assessed together in an integrated manner the RSDF will help to identify SD successes and opportunities and to develop key SD messages and policies.

GOYH was a key partner in the preparation of the initial RSDF document published in 2001 and in the RSDF Update 2003 – 2005.
An important part of both documents has been the associated action plans with assigned lead responsibilities to help overcome gaps and omissions and carry forward the key priorities identified by the RSDF process.
GOYH is fully committed to helping deliver the RSDF and its responsibilities in the current action plans.
