PhD Programme

In 2001, the South Yorkshire Objective 1 programme joined with the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University to embark on a series of applied studies focusing on the implementation of the programme and the implications of future regeneration funding.

Objective 1 co-funded with the ESRC (case studentships) and with Sheffield Hallam University (Hallam studentships) thirteen PhD students to study the Objective 1 Programme, across the breadth of its interventions.

It is the only time such an innovative PhD research approach to European programme delivery has been undertaken, and the first time that such a large number of Economic and Social Reseach Council (ESRC) funded projects (ten) have been used to investigate a major and complex regeneration initiative.

Part of Objective 1’s requirement was that students should submit a paper to the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Review (published three times a year), present their findings at an Objective 1 PhD Conference, and that Objective 1 would provide a two page summary of each study. You can download copies of the Regional Review papers, conference presentations and two page summaries from this website, following the links below. Full reports of completed and successful PhD dissertations can be obtained from the Research & Evaluation team (details below).
