Youth and Street Crime

Anecdotal evidence suggested there were growing problems with groups of youths committing street crime in the Sharrow area of Sheffield.

The Home Office Research, development and Statistics Team (RDS) investigated the problems and follow-up work within South Yorkshire Police showed that increasing numbers were drifting towards crime. Some were already involved; worse still, others were starting to associate with more hardened criminals. Government Office for Yorkshire and The Humber (GOYH) moved to stop the drift by working hand-in-hand with Sheffield First for Safety – the CDRP.

Together we escalated the issue, set about problem solving and developed a solution to engage parents - in practice mainly mothers- with police, council, GOYH and the CDRP working group to spell out what their children were doing. They heard the message and worked up community solutions, supported by the CDRP and the Community Safety team.

Result?
A significant reduction in actual offences, greater parental awareness and closer community/CDRP working.
