Community Safety

The Community Safety Directorate of Government Office for Yorkshire and The Humber (GOYH) is committed to helping reduce crime and disorder (including the fear of crime) and to tackling the problems caused by drugs.

Government Offices make a regional contribution to the Government’s aim to build a safe, just and tolerant society, protect the public and ensure the balance between the rights and responsibilities of individuals, families and communities is properly maintained. Government Offices also deliver the four key themes of the National Drug Strategy. More information on the national picture

We do this by working to improve the effectiveness of the region`s 21 Community Safety Partnerships, which in most cases, incorporate the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) and the Drug Action Teams ( DAT).

To maximise our impact, we are organised into four geographically-based Area Delivery Teams, which work alongside partnerships to advise and support them in delivering the government's crime and drugs Public Service Agreement (PSA) targets.

Our work includes:

  1.  Supporting partnerships to incorporate  recommendations of the Crime and Disorder Act (1998) Review as contained in the Police and Justice Bill (2006).  This will include a new set of national standards for partneship working.
  2. Supporting partnerships in the delivery of key government priorities, including the Drugs Interventions Programme, Prolific and Other Priority Offenders Initiative and the Violent Crime strategy.
  3. Sharing good practice of community safety within CDRP partner organisations
  4. The team also promotes closer links with Local Strategic Partnerships (LSPs) and neighbourhood renewal organisations to support local community safety and sustainable regeneration aims.  This work is reflected in Local Area Agreements (LAAs) and Safer and Stronger Communities Fund (SSCF) Agreements in non-LAA areas.

We work closely with the following co-located teams:

  • Home Office Research, Development and Statistics (RDS) Team, which undertakes research and analysis of crime patterns and trends with an emphasis on identifying, evaluating and disseminating good practice to CDRPs.
  • Drugs National Treatment Agency (NTA) Team, which drives the delivery of drugs treatment services throughout England.
  • National Offender Management Service (NOMS) Strategic Partnership Manager.
