Temporary Event Notices Available Now

Published: Wed, 26 Oct 2005 18:02:09

Application forms for the new Temporary Event Notices (TEN) under the Licensing Act 2003 have been laid before Parliament, James Purnell announced today (21st October 2005).

The notices, which can be submitted to local authorities from 10 November, are a light touch system for temporary events. They will allow village halls, schools and clubs to easily apply for, and put on, one off events involving the sale of alcohol and/or public entertainment.

Events covered by a TEN can last for up to 96 hours and must involve no more than 499 people. The organiser of the event must submit two copies of the application to the local authority at least ten days before the event is due to take place. They must also send a copy to the local police. A TEN costs £21.

Licensing Minister, James Purnell, said:

“Communities thrive on small cultural events that bring people together. So we’ve made it easier to put on ad hoc events by simply applying for a temporary notice. This new system, which involves less red tape, should see local events flourish.

“But, there is a safety check - the police will also be consulted on every application and can object if necessary. Additionally, for the first time temporary events will fall under closure powers. So a disruptive event can be closed instantly by police for disorder, likely disorder or making noise nuisance.”
