Countdown to 'no smoking day 2009'

Published: Wed, 04 Mar 2009 13:53:08

As the one-week countdown to the UK's leading health 'red letter day' begins, Smokefree South West is gearing up to lend its support to the many events taking place across the region to mark 'No Smoking Day 2009'.

On the 11th of March, hundreds of smokers across the South West will aim to stub out their cigarettes for good as part of the national campaign to drive home the health benefits of becoming smokefree.

Events will be taking place across the length and breadth of the region and local NHS Stop Smoking Services, employers and GPs will be providing help, support and advice to those who wish to quit.

With customised double-decker buses, interactive stalls at shopping centres and supermarkets, dance displays and local football clubs all taking part, there are more opportunities than ever for smokers to find the help and support they need to quit smoking on No Smoking Day.

Fiona Andrews from Smokefree South West said:

"By choosing No Smoking Day as your quit date, South West smokers will be joining millions of others across the UK taking the first step toward a healthier lifestyle. You're four times more likely to succeed in your quit attempt when using a free NHS Stop Smoking Service, and with over 1,000 access points to services in the South West, there is always free help and support nearby to help people to quit permanently."

"Smokers funding a 20-a-day habit could find themselves saving over £170 a month and over £2,100 a year," Fiona Andrews added. "And with the credit crunch firmly biting, it's little surprise that millions of smokers across the UK will be taking the opportunity to quit and to see the savings stack up."

Smokefree South West is encouraging smokers across the region to make the commitment to stop by using the support available through the planned No Smoking Day events and throughout the year through the NHS Stop Smoking Services.

To find out more about how to quit smoking, call the NHS Smoking helpline on 0800 707 6543 or text NEARBY and your postcode to 88088.
