Weymouth Relief Road gets Green Light

Published: Mon, 22 Dec 2008 10:39:20

A vital new road that will cut congestion, improve road safety and boost the South West economy has been given the go-ahead by Transport Minister Paul Clark.

The Department for Transport will invest up to £79.2 million in Dorset County Council's 7km single carriageway Weymouth Relief Road - and associated improvements to existing roads. As well as helping tackle congestion and improving road safety, the scheme will provide a new Park and Ride facility and improved facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Transport Minister Paul Clark said:

"This is a crucial scheme for Weymouth, Portland and the wider area. It will take traffic, including HGVs, away from conservation areas such as Broadwey and Upwey, and will improve the quality of life for village communities and relieve congestion. It will also help boost the local and regional economy by improving transport links between Weymouth, Portland, Dorchester and the national road network."

The Department for Transport will provide £79.2m, with Dorset County Council meeting the remainder of the total £87.4m cost. Main construction work is due to commence in spring 2009 with the scheme expected to be completed by October 2011.
