Queen's Speech 2008/09

Published: Wed, 03 Dec 2008 16:33:18

Speaking to both Houses of Parliament today, Her Majesty the Queen set out the legislative programme for the next Parliamentary Session.

Building on last week's Pre-Budget Report, the Queen's speech outlined measures that will enable Britain to build a fairer future for all and help equip people to meet the economic challenges currently facing the country as a result of the global downturn.

Commenting on the Queens speech, Ben Bradshaw MP, Minister for the South West Region said:

"Today's Queen's Speech is about a fairer future for all, not just for some.  As Regional Minister for the South West I want to express my support for these measures that will provide real help for families and businesses across our region facing difficult times in the current financial climate.

Back in the summer I listened to the views of people in our region when I led the Government's consultation on its Draft Legislative Programme and I am delighted to support a set of proposals that addresses the needs of our region.

We are concentrating on bringing people though these tough times as quickly as possible and providing real help for families and businesses in the South West, to:

  • Help people with mortgage and credit card worries;
  • Help people get back into work; and
  • Provide more investment in public services to help local communities.

I am also now leading a Regional Economic Task Group of public and private sector organisations to address the challenges facing the region in the current economic climate.

We have in excess of 400,000 small and medium businesses in our region and the proposed reforms set out in the Queen's Speech to improve protection and access to cash and credit could offer a lifeline to these small businesses".
