Healthy Weight for Children Hub

Published: Fri, 14 Nov 2008 15:35:35

We would like to invite you to be part of an exciting new project - the 'Healthy Weight for Children Hub'

The Hub is a website being developed by the South West Public Health Observatory to provide an evidence base and networking forum for anyone with an interest in child weight issues.

We are now collecting data for the 'Interventions database' part of the Hub. If you are planning, involved in or have recently completed an intervention aimed at improving or promoting healthy weight in children - either directly or indirectly - we would like to hear from you.

We have developed an easy-to-use online form to gather this information - see the links below. As well as enabling others to see what is happening locally and across the region, this database is a great opportunity to share best practice and to promote the work that you are doing to a wide audience, many of whom may be outside your normal reach. We will be promoting the Hub to professionals from a wide range of backgrounds including the NHS, Local Authorities, Community and Voluntary sectors. If you would like to see a list of the data fields in advance of completing the form, see the link below.

Our aim is to populate the Interventions database with as many projects as possible prior to the Hub website going live in December. We would be very grateful, therefore, if you could please complete the form by Friday, 21 November. As a token of our appreciation, we will send you a free Hub mouse mat!

We will, of course, also let you know when the website is live and send you the website link.

Please do pass this message on to anyone you think might be interested.

About the Healthy Weight for Children Hub

The South West Public Health Observatory (SWPHO) is building a website to provide information about evidence-based practice and evaluation of interventions to promote healthy weight in children up to 18 years. This will cover areas such as lifestyle, diet, physical activity, and mental health and wellbeing. The aim of the hub is to:

  • bring people together and enable discussion;
  • share resources and experience;
  • raise awareness; and
  • create a 'grass roots' network (as opposed to a top-down approach).

The website will include:

  • a searchable database of obesity intervention, healthy weight promotion and related projects with a potential beneficial impact on child weight;
  • a  networking area with discussions around key issues;
  • data sets, intelligence tools and analysis;
  • information for parents;
  • guidance on evaluating interventions;
  • information on active travel interventions;
  • news and events listings; and
  • links to useful regional, national and international resources.

The Healthy Weight for Children Hub is part of a larger project, 'Targeted interventions for Child Weight Management', managed by the Government Office for the South West and funded by the Chief Medical Officer.
