Published: Tue, 02 Dec 2008 00:00:00

South West Regional Minister, Ben Bradshaw has launched a new taskforce to help government understand and respond to local and regional needs.

The South West Regional Economic Task Group met for the first time on 7 November in Exeter and included representatives from local businesses, trades union, regional Government agencies and local authorities.

Meeting monthly the group will:

  • Assess the regional impact of current economic uncertainties
  • Provide a forum for the regional minister to discuss economic challenges with private and public sector organisations and for the views of the South West to be represented at a national level
  • Provide a structure through which problems affecting particular sectors or localities can be addressed and public sector intervention co-ordinated to maximum effect.

Ben Bradshaw, Minister for the South West, said:

"I have identified a number of projects in the South West that I want to discuss with the new South West Regional Economic Task Group on Friday".

The new group will look at four key issues;

  • skills and employment;
  • support for business;
  • infrastructure; and
  • resilience of public services
