Developing sustainable communities, with affordable housing, strong public transport and reduced carbon emissions are the major priorities for local areas in the South West over the next three years.
Increasing the number of affordable homes has been identified as a key issue for over 85 per cent of local areas in the region while 75 per cent have pledged to improve transport facilities including walking and cycling options. Equally important are the efforts on tackling climate change.
Across the region 14 out of 16 local councils have promised to tackle affordable housing, among them are Dorset, Devon, Bristol, Bournemouth, Poole and Somerset.
Every local area in England has now agreed its own set of priorities with central government and must devote resources, time and effort to tackling the challenges that will improve the lives of local people in their areas. Extra cash will be available to the highest performing councils. Called Local Area Agreements (LAAs) - local authorities have worked with local service providers such as the Police and Jobcentre Plus to identify key priorities individual to each area.
