Accessibility to improve at more stations in Devon and Cornwall

Published: Thu, 22 Feb 2007 00:00:00

Accessibility is to improve at four stations in Devon and Cornwall, Rail Minister Tom Harris announced today. Nationally, over £6 million has been allocated in the third round of the Department for Transport's Access for All Small Schemes funding.

Access for All is a ringfenced fund of over £370 million through to 2015, directed at making stations easier for disabled people to use. The Small Schemes funding is drawn from this, and will deliver enhancements such as induction loops, improved flooring and disabled parking.

This will be matched by funding from elsewhere in the industry, bringing the total level of investment to nearly £21.5 million. Improvements will be made at St Austell, Saltash, Torre and Topsham stations.

Rail Minister Tom Harris said: "These schemes show the determination of government, industry and other partners to improve access to the railway. Train operators and local authorities have come to us with plans to make their stations more accessible for disabled passengers. And we're helping them to fund improvements such as lifts, ramps, automatic doors, and passenger information systems. These may seem like small changes, but they can make a big difference."
