Over £60m cash to lay the foundations of Eco Towns

Published: Mon, 08 Feb 2010 14:18:55

Housing Minister John Healey has today backed the country's biggest ever green home building programme, with St Austell in Cornwall receiving a share of £60m to build affordable new homes to the toughest ever environmental standards.

A summary of the project proposals at St Austell, China Clay Communities, Cornwall include:

  • A demonstrator project of up to 37 affordable new homes constructed to high environmental standards, located in the town centre. On-site renewables (photovoltaics, solar thermal, micro-generation, small biomass and ground/air source heat pumps) will be used in the building process.
  • The local college will offer apprenticeships and will develop into a centre of excellence for sustainable construction for the South West, offering training and providing sustained economic regeneration in the area.
  • A retrofit display home located in the centre of St Austell will offer information on low-carbon living and help local businesses link into the low-carbon market.
  • A multi-functional community hub, to be run jointly with the Eden Project, will offer community education projects and be a showcase for new environmental technologies, local materials and resources.
  • A project to retrofit ten existing properties will aim to achieve the highest eco standards and deliver at least a 30% carbon reduction against current building regulations. These are intended to demonstrate the potential of alternative technologies, better accessibility and space standards and will be monitored through smart meters and local education projects.
  • A new bus station project will incorporate bicycle storage, electric bicycle charging points, smart technology and the best design principles.
Cornwall estimate at least 500 training places over the build out period of the eco-town, including apprenticeships.
