Extended Schools

An extended school is one that offers services such as study support, childcare, extra curricular activities, family support, health and social care and adult learning outside of school hours.

The idea is that extended schools will become 'community hubs' where children, young people and families can access a wide range of support services. There is no blueprint for the types of activities and support offered by an extended school. After consulting with the communities they serve schools can work with local partners to develop the services people want.

Extended schools are described in 'Every Child Matters: Delivering Change for Children' as one way of working together; bringing a multi-agency team into one location. The Government sets out plans in the DfES Five Year Strategy for all primary and secondary schools to offer services other than just traditional teaching; both universal services and specialist services. Extended schools are also a key part of the Ten Year Childcare Strategy, by being a main centre for providing flexible and affordable childcare out of school hours.
