Connexions is the Government's support service for all young people aged 13-19 in England. It ensures that young people have the support they need to help them make a smooth transition to adulthood and to working life. Government Offices monitor the Connexions Service to ensure it delivers effectively.
The Connexions service is differentiated according to need, providing one-to-one support for young people at risk of exclusion or not realising their full potential. For some young people this may be just for careers advice, for others it may involve some in-depth support to help identify barriers to learning and find solutions, brokering access to more specialist support. Personal advisers work in a range of settings such as schools, colleges, one stop shops, community centres and on an out-reach basis.
There are six Connexions providers in the South West region. The responsibility for delivering the Connexions Service was transferred to local authorities on 1 April 2008 as part of wider Integrated Youth Support Service (IYSS) developments.
