Outcomes for children

Five outcomes have been established after extensive consultation with children, young people and their families. The outcomes provide a framework for policy development and implementation, acting as a unifying force for delivering change for children - from Ministers at national level through to local service delivery.

  1. Achieve economic well-being - not being prevented by economic disadvantage from achieving their full potential in life.
  2. Being health - enjoying good physical and mental health and living a healthy lifestyle
  3. Enjoy and achieve - getting the most out of life and developing the skills for adulthood
  4. Making a positive contribution - being involved with the community and society and not engaging in anti-social or offending behaviour and
  5. Staying safe - being protected from harm and neglect

The outcomes are a high level. Our job now is to flesh out what it means to the local area – how different people contribute to it, as well as which people contribute to it. Parents, families and carers are big influences on those outcomes, and we will need to think about how as service providers to support them, as well as moving from remedial to prevention work, and earlier interventions.

Working with Somerset County Council we have produced a DVD of examples of good practice based around the five outcomes titled 'Its a got to'. Two examples (Dhek Bhal and Leaving Care) from the video can be viewed by following the links below. The 'Its a got to' companion booklet can also be downloaded. If you would like a copy of the DVD please contact us.
