Big Lottery life for Home-Start in Milton Keynes

Published: Wed, 08 Jun 2005 02:00:00

Families in Milton Keynes will continue to benefit from the services of Home-Start, thanks to a grant of £102,909 announced today by the Big Lottery Fund. This is one of 23 awards being announced today, a total investment in the South East of £2.9 million.

Home-Start offers the support of volunteers for families facing a variety of difficulties including loneliness, isolation, children's behavioural problems, ill health, violence, disabilities, bereavement and financial worries. After a family has been visited by a co-ordinator, a trained volunteer is then linked to the family and visits for a few hours every week, helping in any way that can be useful to the family. Volunteers at Home-Start all have parenting experience and offer friendship and practical help to enable families living in the main city area of Milton Keynes to cope with pressures they are facing.

"I am really pleased that the Big Lottery Fund is able to support the Home-Start project in Milton Keynes," said Alison Rowe, Head of the South East Region at the Big Lottery Fund. "This project throws an essential lifeline to families who need help and support for a range of difficulties. The funding will enable Home-Start to continue making a big difference to families in Milton Keynes and have a positive impact on so many local people's quality of life."

Hilary Cannon, Senior Coordinator from Home-Start Milton Keynes said: "We are very pleased and excited by the grant from the Big Lottery Fund. It will enable us to support many more families that are experiencing difficulties. It will also make it possible for us to train additional volunteers from the Milton Keynes communities. We would like to thank the Big Lottery Fund for this opportunity to expand our service."

More details about the lottery funds are available on the Big Lottery Fund website.
