World AIDS day 2008: Celebrating hope

World AIDS day

Published: Thu, 27 Nov 2008 11:03:54

Monday 1 December is World AIDS Day and SPECTRUM (the Home Office support network for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people) and HODS (the Home Office disability network) are hosting a joint event in 2 Marsham Street.

The event is an opportunity for you to learn more about HIV and AIDS, promote good sexual health and combat the prejudice and ignorance that still surround this illness.

 Did you know that:

  • 40 million people live with HIV/AIDS worldwide
  • 12 million children have been orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS
  • there were 4.3 million new HIV infections in 2006 and 2.9 million AIDS-related deaths

From 11.00am onwards in 2 Marsham Street Atrium, there will be information and advice stands from Spectrum, HODS and Tyddyn Bach HIV and AIDS Respite Centre. Useful information material from the National AIDS Trust, the Terence Higgins Trust, GMFA, PACE (Promoting Lesbian and Gay Health and Wellbeing) and Sussex Beacon will also be available.

At 12.30 colleagues are invited to a special presentation in conference room 2 on the ground floor, Marsham Street, from the Tyddyn Bach HIV & AIDS Respite Centre in North Wales on the importance of the services they provide, from a doctor who specialises in HIV and AIDS, and GMFA, the gay men's health charity on what is being done to prevent the spread of HIV.

Everyone is encouraged to use the day to learn more about HIV and AIDS by visiting the information stands in the 2MS atrium. If you would like to attend the presentation at 12.30, please contact the SPECTRUM in-box on spectrum@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk by 26 November.

This event supports the Home Office's three year diversity strategy commitment to build a workplace where people value and respect each other's diversity.

The annual World Aids Day service will be held at Rochester Cathedral on Tuesday 2 December 2008 and will be presided over by Canon Neil Thompson and Father Wilfred McGreal.

The theme for this year’s celebration and remembrance is Lead, Empower and Deliver. Organised by West Kent Positive Support, this event will feature beautifully orchestrated music performed by St Simon Stock School and well known theatrical tunes by LRD Productions. Guest speakers include Adam Holloway MP.

Guests will be informally invited to light a candle in remembrance of someone and have their name included in the Celebration of Hope book.

All are welcome and this compassionate and poignant occasion will draw to a close with mulled wine and mince pies.
