Action starts on cutting the UK’s regulatory burden

Published: Mon, 21 Nov 2005 00:00:00

Thousands of UK businesses, charities and voluntary organisations are being invited to join a nationwide exercise to establish the true extent of the administrative burden caused by government regulation.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, thousands of organisations in these sectors will be interviewed to build a detailed picture of the “administrative burden” – what it costs them in time and money to complete forms and provide information to show they are complying with each regulation. During more than 20,000 interviews, conducted face-to-face and by telephone, stakeholders will also be able to submit their own proposals for improvement.  An independent study estimated that annual savings of perhaps £10bn were achievable through systematically cutting such red tape. The admin burdens measurement exercise in November and December is part of the Government’s wider Simplification Programme.

To find out more, please visit www.betterregulation.gov.uk and click on “Reducing Administrative Burdens”. To take part in the general survey please email adminburdens.measurement@uk.pwc.com, or for the parallel HM Revenue & Customs exercise measuring the administrative impact of tax and duty regulations on the business sector please email hmrcadminburden@kpmg.co.uk.
