IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia) - 17 May 2009

Published: Wed, 13 May 2009 11:26:31

IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia) or IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia) commemmorates 17 May 1990, the day when the World Health Organization finally deleted homosexuality from its list of mental diseases.

In 86 countries globally homosexual acts are illegal, while in seven of those countries, lesbians and gay men, bisexuals and those who identify as trans are sometimes murdered simply because of their sexuality or gender identity

In the South East, Kent held a major event last year at the Police HQ in Maidstone. This year, Surrey is hosting an event  at the Oatlands Park Hotel, Weybridge organized by Gay Surrey and sponsored or supported by:

  • Surrey Police
  • Surrey Police Authority
  • Surrey County Council
  • Woking and Elmbridge Borough Councils
  • Surrey NHS Primary Care Trusts
  • Peacocks Shopping Centre
  • Woking News & Mail
  • Surrey Comet, and of course
  • the Hotel itself

The event starts at 4.00 pm and finishes at 11.00 pm.

The other big South East event this year is at Brighton where Brighton & Hove City Council will officially recognize IDAHOBIT by flying the rainbow flag from the Town Halls of both Brighton and Hove. Things will kick off at 7:30 pm at the Kiss Wall statue near the doughnut groyne at the end of East Street on Brighton seafront. Other smaller events will be happening across the region.
