Key consultation on ending child poverty

Published: Thu, 19 Feb 2009 14:47:28

The Government’s Child Poverty Unit has published a consultation on proposals for a Child Poverty Bill later in the year.

'Ending Child Poverty: Making It Happen' may be accessed at via the DCSF website.

The consultation ends on 11 March 2009. In particular, the Government would welcome views on its vision for eradicating child poverty by 2020, developed through discussion with stakeholders.

This will mean meeting four key aspirations:

  • more parents in work that pays
  • financial support that is responsive to families’ situations
  • improvements in children’s life chances so that poverty in childhood does not translate into poor outcomes, and
  • safe, cohesive communities that support children to thrive

It also seeks views on how legislation could bring partners together to drive action at the local level, and about the targets and measures needed to support the vision.

The Child Poverty Unit will be hosting a consultation event on Tuesday 3 March in London.  Details can be found at: http://livegroup.co.uk/childpovertyconsultationevent/
