New way to look at the Countryside

Published: Thu, 22 Nov 2007 08:24:08

Natural England has launched a new online mapping service to increase public awareness of agri-environment schemes that are helping farmers and land managers to conserve our natural environment. These schemes now cover more than half of all farmland in England.

The online map shows all of the five million hectares of land currently in the agri-environment schemes. The public can search the map by postcode, parish or place name to find out what is happening in their local area. The map allows them to click on an area of land on the colour-coded map to find out more about the agri-environment scheme it is in, the area of land involved and whom the agreement is with.

Agri-environment schemes are an important mechanism for securing sustainable management and enhancement of our natural environment. Nearly £3 billion will be spent through these schemes in England over the next seven years and this online map will enable the public to recognise and support the range of benefits that result from these schemes.

Natural England will be further developing this facility so that people can find out what specific environmental improvements are being delivered in their locality.

The online agricultural map can be accessed through Natural England's website at: http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/campaigns/landmanagement/default.htm
