Early Years and Children 0-13

We support, challenge and monitor progress of local authorities and other agencies in improving outcomes for children and their families. We also work with partners throughout the region to help put into practice the aims of the Childcare Act 2006.

Government Offices work with local authorities and other partners to develop better services for children and young people. More information on the national picture

The Childcare Act 2006 set in legislation some of the key aims of the government's Ten Year Strategy:

  • Choice and flexibility - parents to have greater choice about balancing work and family life
  • Availability - for all families with children aged up to 14 who need it, an affordable, flexible, high quality childcare place that meets their circumstances
  • Quality - high-quality provision with a highly skilled childcare and early years workforce, among the best in the world
  • Affordability - families to be able to afford flexible, high-quality childcare that is appropriate for their needs

We are working in partnership with the Training and Development Agency and Together for Children on Children's Centres and Extended Schools and we have a key role in supporting local authorities in delivering sufficient childcare.
