Children's Fund: the National Picture

The Children’s Fund was set up to prevent children and their families suffering the consequences of poverty. Regional Sure Start and Children's Fund teams located in the nine Government Offices work with Children’s Fund partnerships. The teams report on this work to the Supporting Children, Young People and Families Group in the Department for Children, Schools and Families.

The fund focuses on preventative work, aiming to intervene before children come into crisis. It aims to:

  • improve school attendance and educational performance in children aged 5 to 13
  • reduce the number of children aged 10 to 13 involved in crime, and ensure that fewer children are victims of crime
  • reduce health inequalities
  • involve families in helping with local programmes

Services include:

  • breakfast clubs
  • work with Youth Offending Teams
  • work with hard-to-reach and ethnic minority groups
  • counselling services
  • young carers services

The key principles for the Children’s Fund are to focus on Prevention, Partnership and Participation.
