Useful External Links

There are many websites and publications offering advice on how to form a workplace substance misuse policy. The most helpful of these are:

The Home Office and the Kent and Hertfordshire Drug Action Teams have produced a hugely useful training pack called Substance Misuse and the Workplace: Updated Training Pack (2005). This would be of use to any working group trying to form a policy.

The Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD) carried out a survey, published in 2007, of 505 UK companies about their workplace drugs and alcohol policies, the results of which are available here

CIPD have also produced comprehensive advice entitled Managing Drug and Alcohol Misuse at Work, A Guide for People Management Professionals, (2007)

West Sussex Drug and Alcohol Action Team produced a free and easy to use online resource on drugs and alcohol in the workplace.

A brief, but highly informative and well-designed set of advice from the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), Social Dialogue Forum (SDF), Alcohol, Drugs and the Workplace, (2004) is available here

Employment/ Personnel Advice

Trades Union Congress, Chapter 26 Health and Safety, Drugs and Alcohol (2008) available here

Unite the Union, (formerly Amicus and the Transport and General Workers Union), Drugs and Alcohol Policy:  Negotiators’ Guide, (2004). This provides useful advice as well as current views and practices of the largest Trade Unions and certain public organisations.
