Examples of Good Practice

The best policies tend to be those that are tailored to the individual needs of an organisation, considering its size, function, safety factors and working environment. Examples of good practice include:

Medway Primary Care Trust

This policy deals with all the major areas, with particularly detailed ‘procedures’ for dealing with incidents of substance misuse. It also covers drinking at social events.

Association of Chief Police Officers of England, Wales and Northern Ireland

This is a very comprehensive policy with relevant information on identification of a problem, the limits of confidentiality and the circumstances under which the organisation uses drug testing. It also addresses the dilemma of when to proceed with criminal procedures, as obviously the Police Force itself is the body that carries out such procedures. This is an example of a policy that is really refined to meet the needs of a specific organisation.

Buckinghamshire County Council

This policy is available through the Buckinghamshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team.  It is a very sound policy, with clear definitions and responsibilities set out.

Aylesbury Vale District Council

This is a good example that does not combine drugs and alcohol, but treats them as separate issues.  Also includes rules and procedures about smoking at work.
