Cutting edge companies fly the flag for Cumbria

Published: Wed, 08 Apr 2009 09:57:09

We should celebrate the success of companies that are at the top of their game said Regional Minister Beverley Hughes on a visit to Cumbria.

She was in Ulverston and Barrow to see the work of Marl International Limited which specialises in ultra efficient lighting, submarine builders BAE Systems and community enterprise Signal Films which provides opportunities and training in film and digital media for people of all ages.

Ms Hughes said:

"To find three companies that are performing so well locally and internationally is a real boost during these difficult times. I was particularly impressed by the commitment to help young people whether through apprenticeships, management opportunities or giving them new training."

The Minister also held talks with Cumbria Vision and leaders and chief executives of local councils to discuss the impact of the economic downturn and how partners in the county are working to counter its effects..

She said the Government was providing real help now for families and businesses. Action is being taken to get the banks lending again and kick start the economy by giving a £145 tax cut for all basic taxpayers and cutting VAT, worth £275 to every household.

"In the North West, the Joint Economic Commission, which I chair, aims to protect jobs and get housing development moving. We will help major projects proceed as well as ensure there is advice and support for people and business. I am particularly keen to minimise the impact of the downturn of young people through protecting and expanding apprenticeships - exactly the model being pursued in this part of Cumbria.

"The Commission is focussing the efforts of the public and private sector on seeing all the North West through the current difficulties and making sure it is well placed to take advantage of better times when they arrive."

In preparing for the upturn, the Commission has identified the creative industries, digital technology and low carbon technology as a key area of long term investment.

The Real Help for the North West booklet describes the real help now available to families and businesses. It spells out the investment in skills and infrastructure taking place.
