North West residents join forces to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhoods

Published: Tue, 14 Oct 2008 16:02:17

Residents in the North West are taking to the streets for a week of action to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

In fact, the region's most famous street - Coronation Street - will join in, with the launch of a guide to advise to families on avoiding becoming the target for crime. Across the region there will be "street surgeries", neighbourhood forums, roadshows and a host of other activities, involving thousands of people joining forces with crime-fighting professionals for a week of community action against robbery, burglary, anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and drug misuse.

It is all part of "Not In My Neighbourhood Week", a national event that runs from 13-17 October to highlight what is being done, day in, day out, to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour. Crime fighting agencies will meet hundreds of members of the public to discuss the crime issues that need to be tackled in their local area and to build confidence in the work that they do with the police to make communities safer.

Resident organisations, neighbourhood policing teams, local authorities, Neighbourhood Watch schemes, anti-social behaviour teams and drug and alcohol action teams from across England and Wales are leading the efforts to inform local people of what is being done in their area.

Examples in the North West include:

* Street Surgeries to highlight action against anti-social behaviour in Accrington and act on new concerns raised by residents.

* Events from alcohol and drug advice to dog-chipping and a recruitment drive for neighbourhood watch to cut down on crime in Blackpool.

* Crime prevention and reassurance events across Trafford.

* A big multi-agency event in St Anne's with help and advice on everything from crime prevention to health.

* Activities over the week by the Community Safety Partnership in Pendle, from a Smartwater scanning day checking people and general property for Smartwater and informing them how they can purchase and use it, to children at Walton Lane School running a speed reduction operation on local roads.

* Neighbourhood Watch activities in the Ribble Valley.

* Initiatives in Wirral include operations to catch vandals who target public transport and test purchases to find retailers who sell alcohol to youngsters.

* High-visibility patrols in crime hot-spot areas in Knowsley by police, fire & rescue service, council, and primary care trust representatives to reassurance residents of all that is being done in their community, plus visit to schools to get across messages about Halloween and firework safety.
