Regional Minister hears how European Capital of Culture is helping people into work and communitiesNorth West Regional Minister Beverley Hughes has met European Capital of Culture volunteers and heard how the skills they have gained have boosted their employability and community spirit. The Capital of Culture volunteer programme was created in June 2005 and has trained over 1,000 volunteers who have supported a wide range of events and help shape people's impression of the city. Volunteers benefit not only from the experience of being part of the Capital of Culture, but also from the confidence and skills gained which have opened up opportunities for employment and training. The scheme has been specifically targeted at people at grass roots level and also seeks to encourage interest and participation in their local communities. Cultural organisations across Merseyside have also been piloting the creative apprenticeship programme for young people aged 16 - 24 wishing to work in the cultural sector. During her visit the Minister also met apprentices creating one of the 125 superlambananas, which will be on display in the city throughout the summer. The Liverpool 08 Volunteer Programme is also being looked at as a best practice model for other events, especially the London 2012 Olympics, with particular reference to its practical approach to engaging people who do not normally participate. Regional Minister Beverley Hughes said: " "The Volunteer Programme primary aim was to ensure that the increasing number of visitors to "The scheme has particularly tried to engage people who do not normally participate in community activities. "The confidence and skills gained and behaviours encouraged are leading to both increased employability and effective reengagement with communities."
