Government plans for a fairer society debated on Merseyside

Representatives from the North West’s equality, diversity and volunteer sector have been debating Government plans for a fairer society.

The Government’s proposed Equality Bill was one of the topics of discussion at a meeting on Merseyside today, hosted by Regional Minister Beverley Hughes.

The bill aims to make Britain a fairer place to live where people have the opportunity to succeed whatever their race, gender, disability, age, sexual orientation, religion or belief.

The meeting was part of the consultation being held on the 2008/09 draft legislative programme – Preparing Britain for the Future.

The consultation is being led in the North West by the Regional Minister and this was one of a series of opportunities where people were able to voice their opinions and help shape future legislation

Regional Minister Beverley Hughes said:

“I am keen to ensure that representatives of the North West’s diverse communities have the opportunity to comment not only from their organisational perspectives but also from a personal viewpoint and give their views.

“The programme offers many opportunities for third sector involvement. For example, environmental third sector organisations have been working in an advocacy capacity to inform policy development on the Marine and Coastal Access Bill, and the draft Heritage Protection Bill enhances the role of a type of third sector organisation known as national amenity societies.

“Departments are looking at the impact of proposed bills on the third sector. For example, DCSF will be talking to the third sector about the education and skills bill, and the Department of Health will be looking at the National Health Service reform bill for issues that impact on the sector. It is important that the sector itself engages with these discussions.

“It is important that the Queen’s Speech reflects the views of the people on the ground, people from all backgrounds and of all ages – the experts in their local communities. Our discussions today will be an important contribution to the consultation and I will ensure their views are fed in.”

Among the organisations represented at the debate were: Equality and Human Rights Commission, Lesbian and Gay Foundation, Migrants Workers North West Mothers Against Violence, Steve Biko Housing Association and Groundwork North West.
