Social Inclusion: the National Picture

Social inclusion is a priority issue for many regions. This has been reflected in the regeneration agendas of Government Offices, Regional Development Agencies, through the Single Regeneration Budget, New Deal for Communities and other initiatives.

The Social Exclusion Unit was set up in 1997 and has been at the forefront of addressing some of society’s most difficult problems. Based in the Department for Communities and Local Government, the Unit works closely with other parts of the Department such as the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit and the Homelessness and Housing Support Directorate, to tackle deprivation.

Government Offices work with regional partners and local organisations to maximise the impact of national funding streams to support the regeneration of neighbourhoods and communities, and to encourage social inclusion.
