People and Sustainable Communities

Government Office for the North West is responsible for a wide range of activities to improve and promote sustainable communities. Sustainable Communities are places where people want to live and work, now and in the future. They meet the diverse needs of existing and future residents, are sensitive to their environment, and contribute to a high quality of life. They are safe and inclusive, well planned, built and run, and offer equality and opportunity and good services for all.

Government Offices make a vital contribution to the Government’s commitment to thriving, vibrant, sustainable communities. Communities and Local Government's Sustainable Communities Plan will affect every region of England, providing homes for key workers, regenerating towns and cities and providing parks for families and children. Above all, the plan is about helping people to live where they want to and having pride in their community. More information on the national picture

We work across organisations to enable partners to become engaged with the Sustainable Communities Plan, ensure good practice is recognised and exchanged, and lead on presentation and communication of Sustainable Communities Plan issues. We work to deliver the Sustainable Communities Plan including  cross-cutting issues such as  housing, liveability, rural communities and countryside issues, transport and education.

Our work also involves contributing to the implementation and promotion of housing policy relating to the provision of decent homes and a good quality of life in sustainable communities. We assist partners in assessing and restructuring housing markets, appraise and assess options for the management of housing stock, reorganise the ways that housing services are provided and renew or replace as much of the region's outdated housing as possible.

Along with the delivery of neighbourhood renewal policy, we also handle:

  • Local Strategic Partnerships
  • New Deal for Communities
  • The Single Community Programme and Neighbourhood Management strands of the Safer and Stronger Communities Fund

Government Office for the North West works with a wide range of voluntary and community organisations to enable a strong and vibrant community and voluntary sector to be at the heart of regeneration and community cohesion in the North West.
