Violent Crime

Crime and Disorder Partnerships (CDRPs) in the region are tackling violence through their three-year strategies and in particular alcohol-related violence and domestic violence.

Violent crime – as it is recorded by the police – includes robbery, sexual offences and ‘Violence against the person’ offences, such as assault and murder. However, most recorded violent crime is low-level thuggery, while the UK has one of the lowest murder rates amongst the European Union, with London being below average for EU capital cities. Government Offices have an active role in the effort to continue bringing down the level of violent crime, which has fallen by 35 per cent since its peak in 1995. Alcohol-related Crime

We are working with the North West’s Crime and Disorder Partnerships to help them ensure that effective measures are taken to reduce violence. Education, marketing and more effective environmental planning are all being used to encourage a safer and successful leisure and entertainment sector. Together with CDRPs we are combining appropriate licensing practice with proactive enforcement to tackle the root causes of violent crime and to reduce the number of offences.

Domestic Violence

Government Office for the North West supports the work of Domestic Violence Co-ordinators through a regular regional forum, which shares good practice and management tools in order to improve the support available to survivors and to improve the management of offenders.
