The glossary is presented alphabetically, making it easy to use. Wherever possible, terms are in plain English (although some listings are of a more technical nature – see further information below).
We have produced the glossary with the help of local planning authority officers in the region. Non-professional users can gain an introductory understanding of the issues they may encounter in the preparation of local development frameworks. The glossary will be of interest to those reading regional spatial strategies, unitary development plans, local plans, structure plans, minerals and waste local plans, and planning applications.
The glossary is only an introductory guide to planning issues. In many cases, however, the terms and phrases are taken from national planning policy relating to England.
The Department for Communities and Local Goverment (CLG) is in the process of updating national planning policy guidance on a range of issues. See the CLG website for the latest national planning policy guidance, statements and circulars.
