The ‘National Strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal’ was launched by the Prime Minister in January 2001. This marked the start of a far-reaching programme to reverse the 20-year spiral of decline in the poorest parts of the country.

In the North East, each of the 12 councils has a local strategic
partnership. We support community empowerment networks to fully engage with
local strategic partnerships to bring a voluntary and community sector
perspective to neighbourhood renewal.
Working Neighbourhoods Fund
From April 2008, this new fund replaces the Neighbourhood Renewal
Fund that allocated £377 million between 2001 and 2008 to
the region's most deprived areas.
Ten local authorities qualify for the fund, allocations for
the second year are below. North Tyneside qualified for transitional
payments under the fund so they will receive £590,127 for 2009-10.
