Improvements to A19 Seaton Burn roundabout

Published: Wed, 11 Feb 2009 14:16:58

The Highways Agency is carrying out an £800,000 scheme to improve safety and congestion at the A19 Seaton Burn Roundabout.

The work begins on Monday 16 February and includes:

  • new traffic signals on the A1, A19 and A1068 approaches to the roundabout
  • resurfacing and anti-skid works on the circulatory carriageway and approach arms
  • revised road markings and improved signing
  • a widening of the carriageway on the A1 approach.

In order to minimise the disruption to drivers, one lane of the A19 and A1068 approach roads and the A1 exit slip roads will remain open at all times. Construction work on the slip roads, approach roads and the circulatory carriageway will be carried out at night between 8 pm and  6 am Monday to Friday. Some work on roundabout's central island and grass verges will take place during off-peak periods between 9.30 am and 3.30 pm. Slight delays are expected for drivers.

For the safety of road users and the workforce, there will be a 40 mph speed limit in advance of each end of the roadworks. This will be in place 24 hours a day throughout the works.

There will be closures of the footpath/cycleway to the south and east of the roundabout but signed temporary diversions will be in place and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. Two lay-bys will be closed for the duration of the works. These are the A1 northbound lay-by in advance of the slip road and the A19 lay-by in advance of the westbound approach to the roundabout. The work is due to be completed 12 June.

Highways Agency project manager John Sheerin said "The new traffic signals, improved road surface and signing will improve safety and reduce congestion at this important roundabout."
