One NorthEast Board Reappointments

Published: Mon, 16 Jun 2008 10:29:14

Pat McFadden, Minister of State for Employment Relations and Postal Affairs, today announced the re-appointments of three existing members of the Board of One NorthEast.

Kate Welch, Chief Executive of the Acumen Development Trust representing the voluntary and community sector, and Councillor John Shipley, Leader of Newcastle City Council representing the local authority sector, will take up their three-year reappointments on 14 December 2008, and Ian Brown, local entrepreneur and rural representative will take up his two-year reappointment on 14 December 2008.

Pat McFadden said "I am pleased to reappoint Kate Welch, John Shipley and Ian Brown.  The RDA plays a key role in helping equip the region for the future and I am sure these members of the board will play an important role in that work."

Margaret Fay, Chair of One NorthEast, said “I’m delighted that Kate, John and Ian have been invited to stay with the board. Having the input of business figures at this high level is absolutely fundamental to One NorthEast’s success, particularly those who represent the interests of our varied region, both in geographical and social terms – such as Ian with his rural expertise, and Kate with her work in community enterprise. Equally, local authorities will be key partners in delivering on the challenges of the Government’s Sub-National Review of Economic Regeneration, so the input of representatives like John will be particularly important as we go forward. The experience and expertise which all three bring to the challenge of meeting the region’s ambitious economic goals is invaluable, and I look forward to working with them all over their new terms.”

The original appointments were made following open competition in accordance with the requirements set down in the Commissioner for Public Appointments Code of Practice. All appointments are made on merit and political affiliation plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public.

Response to the political activity questionnaire

Within the last five years Kate Welch and Ian Brown have not undertaken any political activities. Councillor John Shipley has held the position of Leader of Newcastle City Council since May 2004.
