International success for Tyneside firm

Published: Wed, 27 Aug 2008 11:26:26

UK Trade and Investment's Overseas Market Introduction Service (OMIS) has brought international success for Biofresh Limited. The firm specialises in developing and producing innovative, atmosphere control systems that extend the storage life of fresh produce.

OMIS reports were initially commissioned to obtain information on several key markets including Italy, Spain, Egypt and Morocco. Further reports were used to help arrange introductory seminars and customer visits in those markets with the strongest potential. The company is dealing with its first new orders from customers in Spain and Italy.

Jonathan Caisley, Director, of Biofresh Limited, in Gateshead, said "UK Trade and Investment has been an invaluable partner during the introduction of our ozone technology to export markets. The OMIS reports have proven to be an excellent source of vital market information, giving us strong links with fresh produce growers and exporters interested in our residue-free treatments for reduced spoilage and enhanced shelf life.

"The benefits are evident with initial orders in Spain and Italy for use of ozone to treat peaches and kiwi in long-term storage. A combination of research on the local fresh produce sector and local technology seminars has also allowed us to establish a presence in Morocco and Egypt, where we are expecting initial sales for our ozone system to be used during transportation during the coming strawberry season.

"There is a strong demand for residue-free alternatives capable of replacing or enhancing traditional treatments used on fresh produce, but the introduction of such new technologies inevitably relies on strong local partners and good communication. The expertise of UK Trade and Investment staff, both in the UK and local offices overseas, has helped us take the first steps in this process and we look forward to building on this strong base."

Jeff Bean, one of UK Trade and Investment's International Trade Advisors and Sector Lead for Food and Drink, said "OMIS is a flexible service that can be tailored to offer a range of support from researching the market and highlighting potential business contacts to guidance on technical standards, labelling and packaging requirements.

"Through OMIS a company can access commercial staff in more than 200 countries, each with the expert knowledge needed to help draw up a programme to ensure success in the market. Biofresh already supplies many growers, wholesalers, distributors and retailers who are keen to reduce wastage by reducing spoilage and extending the life of fresh produce and was keen to explore the business opportunities in overseas markets. We were able to advise the company on the best markets to target initially and how to access them and we're delighted that its investment in time and resources is now bearing fruit."

OMIS offers five levels of service, built around the typical requirements of a business making its first steps into a new market, all providing a flexible blend of preparatory advice and research as well as support when a company visits the market. Prices range from £500 up to £2,000 including VAT, depending on the level of service required.

The overseas experts will propose a programme of support and advice that meets a company's individual needs. This could include an analysis of possible market entry strategies, identification of possible business partners and preliminary discussions with them on the company's behalf. Staff can also identify potential customers and contacts to meet during a visit to the target market.

Research would highlight local conditions and may include advice on competitors, local regulations and standards relating to the company's products or services. Staff can also assist with introductions to translators or interpreters, offer advice and assistance with publicity in the target market, help organise events and set up key appointments or find relevant tender opportunities.
